Red Lead Furnaces
Lead oxide is a general term & can be used to describe either –
  • Lead Monoxide – PbO – Litharge
  • Lead Tetroxide – Pb3o4 – Red Lead – Brilliant Orange Red Pigment.
  • Black or Gray Oxide – 70% PbO + 30% Metallic Lead

Red Lead is used in
  • Ferrous Metal Protective Paints
  • Stationary / Traction / Tubular Plate Batteries
  • Crystal Glass
  • Television Tubes
  • Glazes

Red lead forms through an oxidation process when the raw material (lead oxide from ball mill) is heated to around 450oC in a furnace. In the oxidation process, the controlling has to be done of –
  • Lead Oxide
  • Oxygen
  • Temperature
  • Time

After the desired % of Red Lead has been reached, it is discharged & ground in a low impact hammer mill to adjust for particle size, distribution, acid adsorption, apparent density etc.

Process: -
A vertical agitator is used for constant mixing of powder inside the furnace. A vertical shaft supports & turns agitator arms to stir the batch lying on top of furnace.
